Introduction: Ankle ligament sprains and tears are among the most common injuries. Some patients may develop chronic ankle instability.
Objective: To develop a method for assessing ankle joint stability.
Materials and Methods: We developed a method for evaluating ankle stability after ligament injuries using dynamic ultrasonography. A comparative assessment of ankle instability was performed in 28 patients (30 feet) using functional radiography and the new method.
Results: The study demonstrated 94% sensitivity and 88% specificity. An inter-rater reliability analysis of this method yielded an ICC of 0.8.
Conclusion: The new ankle stability assessment method allows for the detection of post-traumatic instability and differentiation between ligament sprains and tears. The use of this new diagnostic technique may reduce the incidence of post-traumatic ankle instability.
