Effects of the Polyethylene Glycol Coated Pads On Intestinal Anastomosis Safety: An Experimental Rat Model

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to investigate the mechanical, histopathological and biochemical effects of polyethylene glycol (PEG) coated pads on anastomotic healing in a rat model of colonic anastomosis.

METHODS: In our study, two groups of Wistar Albino male rats(n=9) were formed, and two subgroups were formed to get intact samples. Groups were labelled as follows:

A: Anastomosis only group,

A-int: Intact intestinal specimen from the anastomosis only group,

AP:Anastomosis+PEG pad group,

AP-int: Intact intestinal specimen from the anastomosis+peg pad group.

The rats underwent laparotomy on the 7th postoperative day, and intestinal samples were taken. Bursting pressure, tissue hydroxyproline levels were measured. Mucosal anastomotic reepithelization and granulation formation, inflammatory infiltration, fibrosis and angiogenesis formation were evaluated histopathologically.

RESULTS: Anastomotic bursting pressures are statistically significant higher in group-A when compared with group-AP. In group-AP tissue hydroxyproline levels were found slightly higher but no-statistical significant than other groups. No statistically significant difference between the groups for Mucosal anastomotic reepithelization, granulation tissue formation, inflammatory infiltration, and angiogenesis scores is highest in group-A when compared with other groups. No granulation tissue formation was found in either of the intact groups.

CONCLUSION: Our study demonstrated that PEG-coated pads have no potential benefit to increase anastomotic healing and support colonic anastomosis in rats.
