Incidental histological diagnosis of schistosomiasis after ureteroneocystostomy in a girl with vesicoureteral reflux

Schistosomiasis (Bilharziasis) is a chronic parasitic infestation associated with a high degree of morbidity and mortality in the developing countries of Africa, Latin America and Asia. Two-third of the cases of schistosomiasis are caused by S. haematobium: which is termed as urinary schistosomiasis, reflecting key symptoms such as bloody urine, pain on urination, and an increased risk of bladder cancer. In this case report we presented an urinary schistosomiasis that was discovered incidentally on histopathologic examination of the distal ureteral segment in a child who underwent ureteroneocystostomy.Characteristics, management and prognosis of the disease are discussed.

Şistozomiyazis (Bilherziasis), gelişmekte olan Afrika, Latin Amerika ve Asya ülkelerinde yüksek oranda morbidite ve mortaliteye neden olan, kronik parazit bir enfestasyondur. Şistozomiyazis vakalarının üçte ikisi S. hematobiyumdan kaynaklanır: üriner şistozomiyazis, kanlı idrar, dizüri ve mesane kanseri riskinde artış gibi temel semptomları vardır. Bu olgu sunumunda, üreteroneosistostomi yapılan bir çocukta tesadüfen distal üreteral segmentin histopatolojik incelemesinde saptanan üriner şistozomiyazis sunuldu. Hastalığın özellikleri, yönetimi ve prognozu tartışılmıştır.
